On the two hundredth anniversary of the Battle, Manalapan became home to the 1,520-acre Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Manalapan Township was officially formed March 9, 1848. The new Township, which took its name from the Lenape Indians, and translated to "good bread", had an area of 30.85 square miles and a population of 1,910. At that time, Manalapan could aptly be described as a farming community producing grains and a variety of vegetables. The offices of the Township were originally established in Englishtown, which was included in Manalapan Township. In 1888, Englishtown signaled its intention to become a separate borough and the Manalapan Township offices were moved to Tennent - a small community within the township. The population of Manalapan Township has increased a great deal since 1960 as people migrated from New York City and northern New Jersey seeking a more affordable lifestyle and housing, and highly regarded school systems. It is also a great place to locate a business, with an affluent, educated consumer base and accessible retail corridors.
